ATO Receipt Requirements
To claim a donation as a tax deduction with the Australian Taxation Office, the contribution and the provided documentation must meet several strict criteria.
Core ATO Donation Requirements:

DGR Status: The donation must be made to an organisation currently endorsed by the ATO as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR).

A Genuine Gift: The transfer of money or property must be voluntary. The donor cannot receive, or expect to receive, any material benefit in return. Purchases of raffle tickets, event dinners, or merchandise do not qualify as tax-deductible donations.

No Minimum Threshold (Updated): As of July 1, 2026, the ATO removed the previous $2 minimum threshold for claiming tax deductions on gifts and donations, meaning donations of any amount can now be claimed.

Token Items: If a donor receives a token item of no material value designed to promote the organisation (e.g., lapel pins, wristbands, or stickers), the donation remains fully deductible.
Receipt and Record-Keeping Requirements: Donors must have a written record to substantiate their claim. When a charity issues an official tax receipt, it must clearly display:

The name of the organisation (fund, authority, or institution).

The organisation’s Australian Business Number (ABN).

A statement explicitly indicating that the receipt is for a gift or donation.

The amount of the donation.

The date the donation was made.
Using a PayPal Receipt: A PayPal receipt is completely sufficient for tax purposes, provided it clearly indicates the transaction was made to your registered DGR. The ATO accepts electronic receipts generated by third-party payment gateways like PayPal, Stripe, or GoFundMe just as they accept direct paper receipts.
For your donors, the automated email receipt they receive from PayPal—combined with their corresponding bank or credit card statement—acts as valid and sufficient evidence of their donation when it comes time to lodge their tax return. You do not necessarily have to manually generate a secondary, separate receipt from Echo Nation if the PayPal transaction details clearly cover the organisation name, amount, and date.
